Welcome to the 25th Annual Fruit Shoot.
- Sage’s Bamboo
My grandpa, great grandma, grandma, and uncle passed away within the same month. I struggled to do the simplest tasks. Getting out of bed in the morning seemed impossible, much less care about my academics. My once perfect GPA and perfect attendance dropped astronomically to a 2.0 and absences everyday. I no longer picked up my instruments, went to practice, or spoke to anyone. I thought I had beat anorexia a year ago; but my weight dropped even faster than my grades did. I became the person I feared as a little kid, everyday I wondered if it would be my last as I had no motivation to eat. On June 1st, a beautiful baby hummingbird flew into my tree. I felt the urge to rush outside because I knew something was in my tree. I jumped out the door and saw nothing. As I was walking back, a little hopeless hummingbird was chirping on the hot concrete. I picked him up and immediately rushed to clean him as he was covered in red nectar. Within hours,, this hummingbird became my best friend. I once took him to a flea market and he flew straight into this bamboo plant, I had to get it. He went everywhere with me on my shoulder and despite him being able to fly, he always came back to my window. In my culture, a hummingbird is a sign of a deceased loved one watching over. My family grew bamboo in Mexico before they passed away. I immediately felt a spiritual connection with this little bird and decided to name him sage, as his feathers had this bright green. On the second picture you’ll meet Sage. The kindest soul ever. - Sage’s Bamboo
